It's Bitget vs GCash!

🌟 Editor's Note
Happy Bitcoin All-Time High! I obviously just wrote this sentence last because of the wild price action today. I hope everyone has good food today and remember to TP when happy. Whatever TP means (take picture or…) is totally up to you!
In the days of yore, the Philippines is synonymous to Axie Infinity and play-to-earn
gaming. You bred the Axies, you let someone play it, you both earn revenue, and the cycle repeats.
While that much is over (and so is the number of people who forced themselves to get onboarded to MetaMask), a new activity is becoming more prominent than ever, and it involves scanning your eyes.
💡 In case you don’t know: BitPinas first reported about the activities of Worldcoin in the Philippines way back in January. Since then, more people have signed up and had their eyes scanned anywhere, from Greenhills to Philippine Blockchain Week last month.
Let’s finally dive in.
🧠 Top Story This Week
💸 GCrypto Chief Explains Concerns About Worldcoin

We wrote this article that summarizes the key points mentioned by Luis Buenaventura, the head of GCash’s GCrypto division. GCrypto is one of the platforms in the country, along with PDAX, and Coins, that has WLD token listed. (P.S. I was very surprised to see Coins listing WLD token. I remember their CEO’s numerous posts on X raising concerns about WLD, but perhaps that was his position a long time ago and it’s no longer the case.)
Anyway, Luis’ key points are the following:
“WorldID’s purpose is to prove that you’re a human, not that you’re a specific human. When I get scanned by an Orb, all I’m doing is proving that I’m a real person (because of my unique iris patterns); I am NOT proving I am Luis Buenaventura from Taguig. Your name, email, personal information, contact information… These are all extraneous bits of data that will only become part of your World profile if you voluntarily add them. If you don’t, then it is literally just a blockchain-powered checkbox that says ‘I am not a robot.’”
Now on the Axie part, Luis explains: Worldcoin as crypto onboarding engine is unmatched right now in the Philippines. The flywheel: There is free money when you scan your iris, which, Luis said this was already a good deal for 95% of Pinoys. Then there’s the other rewards when you refer up to 10 people.

“There will be an airdrop around the country”
“I'm unable to form any long-term conclusions about the World project, and this is not a investment thesis.”
“But as I was standing there in the middle of Farmers Plaza Cubao today, I couldn't help but think that I'd been here before. Instead of rows and rows of players competing with their colorful, bouncing NFTs, there were rows and rows of people waiting for their turn to stand in front of shiny steel Orbs ... all of them suddenly aware of the many opportunities that crypto makes possible, for the first time ever.”

🇵🇭 GCash vs Bitget
🏫 GCash Issues Advisory on Bitget

I never expected GCash to come out with an advisory vs Bitget. But to find out where all this stemmed out, let’s revisit the events of the previous month:
At Philippine Blockchain Week, the team at Bitget Wallet unveiled a new feature where users can now pay for goods and products locally by scanning QR Ph with their Bitget Wallet, which is the non-custodial wallet of Bitget (the exchange). The Bitget Wallet is separate from Bitget the crypto exchange.
A few weeks passed and us here at BitPinas finished our article about it.
Note that Bybit also now has the same feature. This is directly within their exchange via Bybit Pay.
Now, last week, GCash released the advisory, clarifying that they don’t have a partnership or even system integration with Bitget.
If you remember our newsletter about the Bitget Wallet <> QR Ph before, I mentioned that we received a number of emails asking us to clarify how it worked, which we obviously don’t know. While these emails are not from regulators, they did come from organizations that work with them.
I just don’t think this ends here.
